William accepted his fate because no matter what William did to be unlike his father, he ended up in the exact place that WHD Sr. He did it all by himself, knee deep in the grave with rough, calloused hands exactly as he described his father when WHD Sr. However, before his father's death, he realized just how much he resembled him when he went to bury Occam. The only other William left was William Henry Devereaux, Sr., and now he was gone. He had already been freed from William Cherry earlier in the book when he accepted that he didn't want to die, and he was freed from William of Occam when Occam (the dog) died. After his death, William was finally free to be his own person - to be his own William. The only person whose fate I will reveal is William's father. If you want to find out what happened between Julie and Russell or who ended up as the English department chair, then read the book.

The epilogue mostly tied up loose ends and explained where people ended up, but it also had some deeper insight into William's state of mind after all the events of the novel happened.
